The Best Art Supplies For Kids of 2022

Art has all kinds of benefits for kids — from self-expression and creativity to developing fine motor skills. Whether your child is an artist by hobby or a future Picasso, encouraging them only gives you a chance to watch their skills blossom.

The best way to inspire kids is to let them create without limitations. Of course, standard art supplies like crayons, markers, and colored pencils can get boring for kids trying to express themselves.

Below, you’ll find some of the best art supplies for kids to get that special creator in your life making art.

Best Crafts for Kids

Both are great hands-on crafts for your children.  The Sculpey III Oven-Bake Clay is great for even young preschoolers as the clay is soft and pliable and allows imagination to soar as they can create whatever they want.  The The Orb Factory Sticky Mosaics is good for slightly older children, or as a project together, as it comes with 4 photos of horses and 2,000 peelable, sticky tiles to create a unique piece of art.

Sculpey III Oven Bake Clay Sample

Sculpey III Oven Bake Clay Sampler 1oz, 30/pkg, 4 Pack

The Sculpey III Oven Bake Clay Sampler, 4 Pack is a great way to practice some hands-on art. It offers plenty of variety for craft projects and is easy enough to handle that younger art enthusiasts can enjoy working with it, too.

One thing that is nice about this type of clay is you don’t have to worry about it drying out. That makes it easy for your child to walk away from an art project for a while and then sit back down and work from where they left off. Once baked, the matte finish can be carved, drilled, sanded, and glazed.

Each of the boxes in this set comes with 30 colors. The variety is perfect for letting your child’s imagination soar as they create everything from clay beads and jewelry to animals and figurines. Since it’s easy enough to drill, sand, and carve once baked, this is also a great choice for older kids who like to add details to their art.

In addition to inspiring creativity, sculpting clay works finger muscles that improves fine motor skills. It is also a great tool for improving dexterity and working the muscles that younger kids need as they are learning to write.

This clay has a soft, pliable texture until it is baked. For some projects that require fine details, it might be difficult to get the clay to hold its shape as you make the design. This wasn’t a problem for my little ones because they were mostly interested in making simpler designs. (One reviewer stated you could possibly freeze the clay to get it a little more solid as you make the details). You could also wait to add the details until after the clay is baked.

  • Clay is soft and pliable
  • Easy for younger kids to work with
  • Fun for everything from jewelry to figurines
  • Works finger muscles and fine motor skills
  • Easy to add details after the clay is baked
  • Comes in a wide variety of colors

  • Might be too soft for some art projects

Orb Sticky Mosaics Horses

ORB 50993.0 Sticky Mosaics Horses, Multi, Brown/Yellow/Pink/Green, 12

The Orb Sticky Mosaics Horses is recommended for kids ages five and older. It comes with four horse designs and over 2,000 sticky tiles that your child can lay over the horse design to create a mosaic masterpiece.

This kit makes it easy for kids to create an art project they are proud of. For younger kids, this a great choice because it helps develop fine motor skills and coordination as they position the different mosaic pieces. Once your little one is done, they can easily hang the finished masterpiece in their room or set it on a shelf.

Since the mosaic pieces come with sticky backs, there is no mess. One thing that might be difficult to do with younger kids is peeling off the individual pieces if they cannot do it themselves. However, this makes it a fun bonding exercise for parents of younger kids as they help their little ones create their fun design. They can use the different colors included to make it their own.

  • Great for room decor
  • Guided craft that allows plenty of room for creativity
  • Comes with enough pieces to complete 4 designs
  • Included templates make it easy to follow along
  • Recommended for ages five and older
  • Great for exercising fine motor skills

  • Might be hard for younger kids to pull the mosaic pieces off the sheet

While there are a lot of pieces, some of them are fairly small. If your kids dump all of them out, it’ll take a while to clean everything up. You also don’t want to let younger kids use this without supervision because they might put small parts in their mouths. This set is recommended for ages 4 and older.

  • Comes with a wide variety of supplies
  • Perfect for inspiring creativity or doing school crafts
  • Fun for all ages 4 and up

Art 101 142-Piece Wood Art Set

Art 101 Doodle and Color 142 Pc Art Set in a Wood Carrying Case, Includes 24 Premium Colored Pencils, A variety of coloring and painting mediums: crayons, oil pastels, watercolors; Portable Art Studio

The Art 101 142-Piece Wood Art Set comes with pencils, drawing tools, crayons, oil pastels, and watercolors. This set is a great choice for parents searching for a variety of art supplies online and is recommended for kids ages 8 and older.

The 142 pieces in this set includes 60 crayons, 24 oil pastels, 24 colored pencils, and 24 watercolor cakes. It also comes with two sketch pencils, an eraser, two paintbrushes, three mixing palettes, and a pencil sharpener. These are all good quality for elementary-aged kids, however, the oil pastels don’t smudge together as well as higher quality ones do.

In addition to the art supplies, a well-designed wooden case comes with this set. It has a removable drawer and separate areas for each type of supply. This helps your child keep their art supplies organized and prevents breakage.

The case is available in a gray-washed wood or cherry wood. Unfortunately, the drawer where the crayons are held can be difficult to open, especially after it’s been moved around. This is especially a problem if you want something your child can easily take along with them for playdates or sleepovers.

  • Comes in a gray-washed or cherry wood case
  • Included case keeps art supplies organized
  • Wide variety of art supplies included
  • Great for basic drawing, coloring, and painting
  • Perfect beginner art set for elementary-aged kids
  • Case comes with removable drawer

  • Drawer can be hard to open after the set has been moved
  • Oil pastels aren’t the best quality

Best Coloring Supplies for Kids

Everyone is familiar with the popular Mr. Sketch Scented Markers which is a set of 12 scented markers that are made of non-toxic ink for your little artists.  These markers are very affordable and ideal for any child who likes to draw or color.  However, the Crayola Inspiration Art Case includes crayons, colored pencils, and two sizes of markers as well as paper and a carrying case.  The Crayola name is well known for their products and while this set is much pricier, it includes 140 pieces.

Mr. Sketch Scented Markers

Sanford® Mr. Sketch® Watercolor Markers, Scented Assorted Colors, Set Of 12

The Mr. Sketch Scented Markers are the same ones parents probably know and love from their childhood. These have AP-certified non-toxic ink and are recommended for kids ages three and older.

The scents included in this set are banana, watermelon, raspberry, orange, cherry, blueberry, apple, fruit punch, grape, mint, cinnamon, and licorice. Your child will love coloring and then sniffing their art, adding to the fun experience.

Mr. Sketch markers feature a wide barrel that is easy for children to grasp in their hands. They also have a chisel tip that offers three different line widths. This makes them perfect for everything from coloring large areas to creating finer details. Mr. Sketch markers are also a great choice for school projects because of the variety of line widths.

There is a reason Mr. Sketch markers have been around so long- they are great quality. The biggest problem you might have is cleaning your little one’s nose if they bump it while sniffing the markers.

  • Comes in 12 different colors/scents
  • Fun for art projects, school projects, and coloring
  • AP-certified non-toxic ink
  • Wide barrel is easy to grip
  • Chisel tip offers variety of line widths

  • We couldn’t find any!

Crayola Inspiration Art Case Coloring Set

Crayola Inspiration Art Case Coloring Set, Gift for Kids, 140 Art Supplies

The Crayola Inspiration Art Case Coloring Set comes with 140 pieces including all the basics your child needs to color and some large pieces of paper. The supplies included are non-toxic and the set is recommended for ages five and older.

In addition to the cases, this set includes 40 washable markers, 64 crayons, 20 colored pencils, and 15 large pieces of paper. The big pieces of paper are a nice addition for kids who might want to make larger creations and the art supplies are the same quality that you’d expect from Crayola. The included markers come in two sizes, a regular size and a mini size that are nice for smaller hands and adding details.

The art supplies included in this kit are perfect for kids who like to color. They are also great for school projects, especially for elementary school kids.

Even though the included carrying case is a nice addition, it doesn’t have the same quality as a wood case. Instead, it is made of thick, durable cardboard that has had paper laid over it to make the design on the case. It does still make carrying the supplies easy, however, if your child steps on it or bangs it around it will not withstand the abuse.

  • Comes with quality Crayola art supplies
  • Great coloring set for ages five and older
  • 15 sheets of large paper included for added coloring fun
  • Has markers, colored pencils, and crayons
  • Great for coloring and school work
  • Non-toxic supplies, good for kids ages five and up

  • Carrying case isn’t the best quality

Best Painting Supplies for Kids

While the Acrylic Paint Pens is a set of 12 vibrant, water-based acrylic paint pens and the The Pencil Grip Kwik Stix Tempera Paint Set includes 24 tempera paint pencils, including neon and metallic paints, the Creativity for Kids Hide & Seek Rock Painting Kit is an activity kit that includes 10 rocks to paint with the included non-toxic paint pods.

Acrylic Paint Pens

Acrylic Paint Pens for Rocks Painting, Ceramic, Glass, Wood, Fabric, Canvas, Mugs, DIY Craft Making Supplies, Scrapbooking Craft, Card Making. Acrylic Paint Marker Pens Set of 12 Colors

The Acrylic Paint Pens, Set of 12 are perfect for painting rocks, canvas, mugs, and more. They are great for the same activities as painting, however, there is more control because of the pen design. These paint pens are recommended for children ages three and older.

The set comes with 12 vibrant colors that make it easy to write, draw, and color on various surfaces. Each pen is water-based and non-toxic, meaning there is no odor and it’s safe for kids of all ages to use.

The tips of these pens are 2mm, which is a medium size. This lets the paint flow freely without sacrificing too much control. As the paint adheres to all kinds of surfaces, there’s no limit to what your child can create with these pens. Toddlers will have fun embellishing their art crafts while older kids might enjoy decorating notebooks or their class binders.

Something to note is that you can’t always just pick up these paint pens and start drawing. You’ll need to shake the pen up and down about 15 times (be sure the lid is on tightly to prevent splashing). Then, press down on the tip until you see the paint fill the chamber behind the pen nib. While it might be easy enough for a teen to figure this out, it does make the pens harder for kids to use without adult supervision.

  • Paints on a wide variety of surfaces
  • Gives good control over the paint
  • 12 different colors included
  • Non-toxic, water-based paints
  • Good choice for ages 3 to adult

  • Hard for younger kids to use without adult help

The Pencil Grip Kwik Stix Tempera Paint

The Pencil Grip Kwik Stix Tempera Paint, Classic, Assorted 24 per Set

The The Pencil Grip Kwik Stix Tempera Paint is great for kids ages three and older. It’s perfect for all types of art and school projects, especially because the paint sticks offer more control than traditional painting supplies.

These pens come in a wide variety of colors, including 12 basic colors, 6 neon colors, and 6 metallic colors. They’re perfect for painting pictures, writing on poster board, painting on wood, and more. Like other best paints for kids, these are washable. However, they are significantly less messy because you don’t need any water or brushes and the paint dries in just 90 seconds.

These paint pens are also non-toxic like you want for kids. They do have small caps and are a choking hazard, however, so you’ll want to wait until your child is at least three before giving them these pens. They’re also simple to use, all you do is uncap the pens, twist, and start painting.

The one thing to note is that even though these are paint pens, they do not have brushes at the tips. They are made from a solid tempera paint that resembles waxy sticks. While they’re great for drawing with paint and making letters, you can’t get the same effects as you would with a paintbrush. Your child will likely still love playing with them, but this isn’t a great set if your child is interested in blending colors and learning different painting techniques.

  • Mess-free way for kids to paint
  • Great for art and school projects
  • Works on a wide variety of surfaces
  • Comes in basic, neon, and metallic colors
  • Washable and non-toxic
  • Don’t need any water
  • Dries in just 90 seconds

  • Can’t practice painting techniques
  • Can’t blend colors

Creativity for Kids Hide & Seek Rock Painting Kit

Creativity for Kids Hide & Seek Rock Painting Kit - Arts & Crafts For Kids - Includes Rocks & Waterproof Paint

The Creativity for Kids Hide & Seek Rock Painting Kit comes with rocks waterproof paint, and transfers so your child can make all kinds of fun rocks to hide for others to find. This is a great project for sleepovers, parties, or family fun night.

The kit comes with ten rocks, which is plenty for having fun. It also has eight pots of waterproof paint, a paintbrush, and transfer stickers. The stickers are fun to add details and a creative flair to any of the rocks your child paints. All of the included art supplies are non-toxic and safe for people of all ages to use.

The weather-resistant design is perfect for keeping your rocks looking good for a long time. You can place them in a garden for your child to admire or hide them around town. Tracking tags are also included so your child can follow along with their rock’s journey on social media. (You’ll want to avoid putting any information that strangers could identify your location on the rock, but sometimes people use hashtags to track pictures on social media).

The included rocks have a smooth design ranging in size and shape from 1-2″. One thing to note is that the included paint pots are difficult to snap shut all the way once they’re open. If they pop open, they’re going to dry out between uses. Additionally, with this being weather-proof paint, it can be very hard to get off your child’s skin after they’re done painting. There is also a risk of staining.

  • Comes with 10 rocks with smooth edges for painting
  • Weather-resistant paint to withstand the elements
  • Comes with sticker transfers and tracking tags
  • Everything you need for painting fun
  • Decorate a garden or hide around town
  • Comes with non-toxic paint

Handy Art Little Masters Tempera Paints Set

Handy Art Little Masters Tempera Paints Set, 16 oz, Pack of 6 .

The Handy Art Little Masters Tempera Paints Set comes as a set of the six most common colors; black, white, yellow, red, blue, and green. These are also water-based, non-toxic paints, making them perfect for younger painters.

These paints are perfect for everyone from toddlers to teens. You can teach younger kids about colors and how blending different colors makes others (for example, how yellow and red make blue). The consistency of these paints allows them to be blended together.

Even being water-soluble, these are opaque once applied to paper, cardboard, or other surfaces. The colors maintain their integrity and will not chip or flake away once they are dry. Even being designed durable, you can use soap and water to wash this away from surfaces that you don’t want paint on. It washes off of tables, your little one’s skin, and other surfaces they might accidentally paint while they’re having fun.

Royal Langnickel – The All Media Easel Artist Set

Royal Langnickel - The All Media Easel Artist Set

The Royal Langnickel – The All Media Easel Artist Set comes with everything your child needs to explore the world of painting. It comes with a wide variety of art mediums, making it easy for your child to explore their talents. This is a great choice in art kits for 10 year olds because kids around that age are old enough to handle the set responsibly.

The included wooden box makes it easy for your child to organize and store their art supplies. In this art kit, you’ll find 12 watercolor paints, 12 acrylic paints, and 12 oil paints. This set also comes with a graphite pencil, sharpener, and eraser, 12 watercolor pencils, 12 soft pastels, and 12 oil pastels. Paint accessories including 9 paintbrushes, a paint palette, and 3 palette knives are also included.

In addition to the art mediums included, this comes with a mixed media paper pad and 2 artist canvases. Your child can fold out the top of the storage case and set these on the easel while they work. When not in use, there are two latches that keep the storage case shut.

Even though the storage case is nice, there are sometimes issues with the drawer shutting. It can also be difficult to open once it arrives.

  • Great as an introduction to different art techniques
  • Fun for people who like a variety of mediums
  • Plenty of different brushes included
  • Comes with an easel for making art easier

Best Drawing Book for Kids

How to Draw 101 Animals

How to Draw 101 Animals (1)

The How to Draw 101 Animals is a great choice for a child interested in drawing. The book provides easy step-by-step drawing instructions with good details that will make it fun and easy for your child to learn. As they use the same basic techniques to make the drawings, your child will build foundational skills that will help them with drawing in the future.

The instructions included in this are fairly simple and include step-by-step illustrations that make this easy for younger art enthusiasts to follow. It’s recommended for kids as young as five as an introduction to drawing. Most of the shapes are simple, so it’s great for kids who are just getting started.

Even though the shapes are great for beginners, something to note is that this might be too simple for kids who have already developed some drawing skills. This book is also in black and white. While that is good because it stops your child from being distracted from the simple shapes, it also makes the finished product less visually stimulating. Of course, your child still might have fun coloring in their creation without guidance.

  • Great introduction to drawing
  • Basic shapes are simple for beginners to make
  • Recommended for ages five and up
  • Comes with plenty of animals to draw
  • Step-by-step instructions are easy to follow

  • Only has black and white
  • Too simple for older kids

How We Selected Art Supplies for Kids

When shopping for art supplies (especially for younger kids), you want something safe for them to use. With art supplies like markers and paints, it’s important to choose non-toxic varieties.

Some common additives in art supplies like paints, glues, and markers include petroleum-based dyes, formaldehyde-based preservatives, heavy metals, phthalates, parabens, and other toxic additives. Even if you can keep it out of your child’s mouth, chemicals can get into their bloodstream from the pores on their hands.

When shopping for paints, you’ll want to choose something water-based over oil-based. Additionally, look for markers and other art supplies that are labeled as being non-toxic, made from natural or mineral-based pigments.

Choking Risk

Some art supplies are a choking hazard for younger children. You’ll want to supervise toddlers closely when they’re using things like googly eyes, beads, and sequins. They’re great for improving fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination but you’ll want to make sure your child keeps them out of their mouth.

If you want some art ideas specifically for young toddlers, be sure to check out our post on art projects for 1-year-olds

Age/Skill Level

We tried to cover everything from the best art supplies for toddlers to teens. While some supplies (like scented markers) might be fun for a wide range of ages, you’ll want to consider your child’s skill level for others. Certain supplies (like drawing books or art sets) might target a certain age group.

Ideally, you want to choose art supplies that fit your child’s skill level. Something that is slightly difficult might encourage them, while a concept that is too challenging can discourage them. Likewise, something that is too simple might be boring for your child.

Coloring and drawing is a great place to start. Soon, however, you might want to advance to art kits for kids in your child’s age group. These are great because they have the benefit of letting your little one try different art projects that are age-appropriate.

Clean Up

Art is meant to be a messy process. Even so, especially when dealing with younger kids, you want to choose art products that can easily be cleaned. For example, washable markers and paints are preferred over permanent markers or acrylic paints.

By making sure to pick up the washable versions of art supplies, you won’t have to worry about making your child be careful and they have a little more freedom to exercise their creativity.

FAQs – Art Supplies for Kids

What are some of the benefits of art for kids?

Even at a young age, toddlers use art as a creative outlet to express themselves. It can help them express emotions they don’t know how to describe yet.

Holding different art supplies and using them also encourages fine motor development that is critical as your child learns to write and draw. Doing specific crafts with them helps with following directions and sequential thinking while letting them create freely encourages creativity. Art can also be used to teach colors, math, and more.

Even as your child gets older, giving them the ability to make art helps them develop useful skills. Statistically, they’re more likely to succeed in school. This may be in part to how art helps kids express themselves even in the rougher teenage years. As an adult, that creativity can help with problem-solving and critical thinking, making them more employable.

What art supplies should I get a kid who likes to draw?

The best art supplies for kids who like to draw are sketch pads and drawing pencils and accessories. For kids interested in learning how to draw different things, drawing books can help them expand on their skills if they’re interested. If they want to add color to their paintings, colored pencil is a good choice because they can press down more or less to get different shades and add depth to their drawing.

What are the best art supplies for toddlers?

Many toddlers start out with coloring and drawing. Having a wide variety of colors of markers and crayons is a great place to start. Vivid colors are visually engaging and generally more fun for younger kids. You could also try out the Mr. Sketch Scented Markers mentioned above for ages three and older. Chalk is another fun drawing tool for toddlers.

Drawing tools aside, be sure to provide basics like non-toxic glue, safety scissors, construction paper, and things your child can glue to paper and other surfaces. You’ll want to be wary of choking hazards for children under three when choosing art supplies. Even though it can be fun to let them string beads or glue sequins or googly eyes, you’ll want to keep an eye on them and be sure they aren’t putting them in their mouth.

Finally, paint makes for great toddler art supplies. Finger paints are a good place to start. Your child might also enjoy watercolors or paint dabbers, which are pens that have paint inside that make a mark when you press it to the paper. (You might think of them as Bingo daubers).

How can I encourage my child’s creativity through art?

One of the best things you can do to encourage your child’s creativity through art is giving them the freedom to create what they want. Give them some old recyclables, glue, and some beads, googly eyes, strings, and anything else you have handy, and see where that takes them. Let them color outside of the lines and let them draw what they like. Don’t be afraid of them making a mess- just help them clean up afterward.

Leading by example can also get your child interested in creating more. Invite them to participate in your favorite creative hobby. Sit down and paint together (even if you aren’t good at it). When they’re finished, ask them to talk about their art and share how you feel about yours. Asking after (instead of in the moment) helps your child’s creativity flow. Children think creatively in the moment, so they might lose their spark of inspiration if you interrupt them to make them think logically about it.

While you’ll want to offer plenty of time for creativity, it’s also a good idea to expand on your child’s skills and give them new ideas. There are some TV shows that focus on art and creativity (my son’s favorite is Creative Galaxy with Arty the Alien) and you can also look at parenting websites and on Pinterest to get fresh art ideas.

Finally, let everything around you be inspiring. Pick up flowers, rocks, and other things from outside and let your child arrange them on paper. Put shaving cream on the wall of the tub or on the table and encourage them to draw. There’s plenty of options if you know where to look.

What’s the best paint for kids?

For toddlers, washable tempera paints are the best. You might want to choose finger paints specifically or let your child experiment with brushes. (My kids also like to paint their plastic toys and then wash them in a bath, so washable is a great choice for activities like this, too).

Watercolors can also be fun, however, kids’ watercolors are not always as saturated as tempera paints. Some kids prefer the brighter colors of tempera paints.

As your child gets older, acrylic paint is a good place to start. It offers more control than some other paints and your child can experiment with blending different colors. Watercolors are fun to play around with, but you’ll want a nice set. Oil paint is significantly harder to use than the other options, so it’s best for more skilled painters.
